Peer Review Process

Applied Engineering: Jurnal Rekayasa dan Sains Terapan applies a selective editorial and peer-review process to ensure the quality, originality, relevance, and academic integrity of all published manuscripts. The process from submission to publication may take up to six months, depending on the author’s responsiveness to editorial policies, reviewer comments, and revision requirements.

Manuscripts are selected based on their academic quality, relevance, originality, clarity, ethical compliance, methodological soundness, and contribution to the journal’s scope. The journal provides reviewer comments to authors regardless of whether the manuscript is accepted or rejected. In some cases, the journal may reject a manuscript while inviting the author to resubmit it after addressing specific editorial concerns.

The manuscript review procedure is as follows:

1. Initial Editorial Screening

Within one week after manuscript submission, a member of the Editorial Board will review the manuscript by considering the following aspects:

  1. conformity with the journal’s Author Guidelines;

  2. relevance to the scope and readership of Applied Science: Jurnal Sains dan Teknologi Terapan;

  3. clarity of presentation;

  4. methodological and scientific soundness; and

  5. scientific and ethical acceptability.

At this stage, the Editorial Board may decide to:

  1. accept the manuscript for external peer review;

  2. return the manuscript to the author for preliminary revision; or

  3. reject the manuscript.

If a manuscript is not recommended by one Editorial Board member, it may be assigned to another Editorial Board member for blind editorial review. If both members do not recommend the manuscript, it will be rejected by the Editorial Board. If the first two editorial recommendations differ, a third Editorial Board member may be consulted to support the final decision.

2. External Peer Review

After passing the initial editorial screening, the manuscript is assigned to external reviewers with relevant expertise in applied science, technology, engineering, environmental science, information systems, marine science, fisheries, or other related fields. Applied Engineering: Jurnal Rekayasa dan Sains Terapan applies a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are kept confidential.

Peer-review comments must be objective, constructive, respectful, and academically grounded. Reviewers are expected to avoid aggressive, personal, or unnecessarily negative comments toward authors.

Reviewers are requested to complete and return their review reports within two weeks after accepting the review assignment. Reviewer recommendations may include:

  1. accepted;

  2. accepted with minor revisions;

  3. accepted with major revisions; or

  4. rejected.

3. Author Revision

Manuscripts requiring revision will be returned to the corresponding author. Authors are given up to four weeks to respond to reviewer comments, revise the manuscript, and submit the revised version to the Editorial Board.

Authors must provide a clear response to reviewer comments and indicate the changes made in the revised manuscript.

4. Editorial Decision after Revision

Manuscripts requiring minor revisions may be evaluated and approved directly by the Editorial Board before being accepted for publication.

Manuscripts requiring major revisions may be returned to the external reviewers for further evaluation and will follow the review procedure as outlined for the initial peer-review stage.

The final decision on manuscript acceptance rests with the Editorial Board based on reviewer recommendations, manuscript quality, author revisions, scientific contribution, methodological soundness, and compliance with journal policies.

5. Galley Proof

Once a manuscript is accepted, the journal will inform the author about the galley proof stage. Authors are expected to check and confirm the galley proof within 48 hours after receiving it.

At this stage, authors should only make corrections related to typographical errors, formatting, author details, equations, tables, figures, or minor factual inaccuracies. Substantial content changes are not normally permitted at the proof stage.

6. Copyediting and Layout Editing

All accepted manuscripts may be edited to improve clarity, readability, consistency, style, grammar, citation format, and conformity with the journal format. Authors will have the opportunity to review and approve relevant revisions made during the copyediting process.

7. Feedback on the Review Process

The Editorial Board welcomes comments, suggestions, and feedback from authors, reviewers, and readers regarding the peer-review and editorial procedures of the journal. Such feedback may be used to improve the quality, transparency, and accountability of the journal’s publication process.
